Because the US was still a colony of the UK and the Thirteen Colonies had a growing population from immigration and huge families, the US fought against France for their land in North America.

After the Battle of Saratoga, France decided to use their ships to help America. Before, France only helped America by giving them loans. France's main reason for helping America is they wanted to see the British Empire loose land. France's biggest help to America was in the Battle of Yorktown.
